HIIP Innovation Week
Welcome to the inaugural HiiP Innovation Week 2023
The U-M School of Nursing Healthcare Innovation Impact Program (HiiP), the hub for nursing innovation at the School, will host its inaugural Innovation Week from March 20-24. This year’s theme is: “The Building Blocks to Nursing Innovation”. The week promises to be educational and inspirational, and we hope you find time to participate in some, if not all, of the events we have planned for you. And for those who can’t attend in person, the program will broadcast speaker presentations via Zoom.
Through our recent Innovation Survey to faculty and students, you have told us that:
- You want to learn more about nursing innovation;
- You believe nurses are good at coming up with innovative ideas;
- You want to gain insights and skills about how to bring your ideas to market; and
- You are interested in participating in innovation-related training or educational opportunities to become more well-versed in nursing innovation and how you might do it.
This week has been designed to start to lay a foundational framework for what nursing innovation is, or can be; how to light that innovative flame to create a new project; and what resources are available across campus to help move your idea forward. We’ve also thrown in a dash of inspiration as we showcase your nursing colleagues who have, or are, working on their own innovations, and so much more.
Whether you’re a faculty, student, nurse, alumni, or anyone interested in learning more about harnessing and supporting your own or another nurse’s innovative spirit and ideas, we look forward to seeing you in person or via Zoom. This week has been designed for all of us as we strive to make the U-M School of Nursing a place where nursing innovation is growing and thriving.
Why is nursing innovation is important to healthcare?
As a nurse or nursing student, you are embedded in all facets of healthcare. Nurses know better than anyone what patients, their families, fellow nurses, healthcare systems, and the community need–and when these needs are being met, and where the gaps are. Nurses are also the largest segment of the U.S. healthcare workforce, so they have a critical mass that can be leveraged to create change where and when needed. Importantly, nurses are also closest to the problems patients face.
Yet despite nearly every health system interaction beginning or ending with a nurse, there are relatively few nurses at the innovation table! So HiiP is working to change this by educating and empowering you, as current and future nurses, to know what innovation is (it’s broader than you think!) and how to create and bring your idea(s) to market to serve those you intend them to benefit.
HiiP encourages you to take advantage of the planned week and know that HiiP is always here for you and your innovative ideas.
