Global Opportunities for Nursing Students
As a U-M Nursing student, you can enrich your nursing education through various transformative global opportunities that will allow you to immerse yourself in different cultures or contexts, and challenge you to expand your perspectives. A typical example of a global program is what is commonly referred to as a study abroad program. There are many kinds of study, intern, research abroad programs offered through the UMSN as well as the UM. You can explore some of these below. These programs are open to any nursing student, not only those in the global health minor or global health concentration programs.
As a student pursuing the global health minor or concentration, you are required to fulfill a global immersion program. However, this does not mean you are required to travel abroad. You can explore alternative intercultural immersion experiences to fulfill the global health minor. Some of these options are listed below, but if you have other ideas, please feel free reach out to us. All students and levels are welcome to explore these options:

Examples of alternative/non-travel global immersion opportunities
“Local” can be Washtenaw County, Detroit, West/North Michigan, or another local community in your state depending on where you will be. Some ways you can explore Michigan based community engagement opportunities can be viewed on Ginsberg Center website. If you live outside of Michigan and would like us to review a volunteer/internship opportunity for you, please contact the Office of Global Affairs with details of your community engagement project/internship as identified below in the “set up an alternative experience” section.
Immerse yourself in various global health perspectives in innovative practice, research and advocacy initiatives. This program will kick off with U-M School of Nursing Global Summer Institute on May 11, 12, 13 where you will hear from keynote speakers, as well as join skills sessions to gain practical tips designed to advance your academic, professional and personal engagement with global health.
Through May and June, join the weekly Global Health Coffee and Conversation Series that bring lived perspectives from different cultures and health systems in various fields in health from maternal health, to mental health, community care, access and changing systems. These are designed to be interactive conversations where students will participate in the conversations to deepen their understanding in various fields of global health. Students are required to complete a reflection paper, which can be showcased and/or presented at the U-M School of Nursing Global Fair in Fall.
Additionally, there are individual global heath projects available for graduate students. Please contact the U-M School of Nursing Office of Global Affairs if you are interested in setting up a custom virtual global health project.
