Student spotlight: Stage four cancer survivor provides inspiration and awareness

Katie DeGrace was just ten years old when subtle signs of trouble began to appear. It was the late summer of 2006 when she started having occasional stomachaches, fatigue and fevers.

“I was always an active kid but I didn’t want to do many things,” said DeGrace, a native of Frankenmuth, MI. “I didn’t feel well, but then the symptoms would wane and I would be okay. I had always been healthy so we didn’t think something was seriously wrong.”

UMSN announces DEI Activities Seed Funding

The University of Michigan School of Nursing has just announced the opportunity for faculty, students and staff to apply for funding of up to $300 to support diversity, equity, and inclusion activities in courses and co-curricular activities. This initiative comes out the office of the Chief Inclusion Officer, Dr. Rushika Patel, and is intended to support particularly novel approaches and those that bring potential benefits to large numbers of students.

Ph.D. student receives grant to support research in Zambia

Julie Buser, Ph.D. candidate at University of Michigan School of Nursing, received the Bobbe and Jon Bridge Award for Engaged Scholarship to support her original research in Zambia.

The award comes to her from Rackham Graduate School. Bobbe and Jon Bridge Awards for Engaged Scholarship support Rackham students who conduct research focused on child welfare.

Buser's dissertation focuses on global child health, in particular, neonatal health and maternity waiting homes in Zambia.

Sedative/tranquilizer misuse a strong indicator of future substance use disorder; young adults most at risk

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Misusing sedatives or tranquilizers signals a credible risk for the abuse of more addictive substances in the near future, according to new research from the University of Michigan School of Nursing’s (UMSN) Center for the Study of Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health.

Brave spaces at the University of Michigan School of Nursing

The University of Michigan School of Nursing recently unveiled a set of educational materials designed to encourage productive, challenging conversations among the school community. Designed to be used both in the classroom and in office settings, or even just among friends, “Creating Brave Spaces” is a guide for navigating difficult conversations around challenging topics, such as identity or politics.
