Teaching

Norma J. Sarkar joined the University of Michigan School of Nursing as a Lecturer in 2002 in the Division of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction Programs, and was later moved to LEO Lecturer II in 2010.  She was transferred to Clinical Instructor in the Undergraduate Program in the area of Global Health in 2013. Norma J. Sarkar has been a consummate teacher and mentor to students.  She has taught community health nursing in the undergraduate and second career programs since the Fall of 2002 and provided clinical instruction at a variety of community sites including Washtenaw County Health Department.  She guided students in the delivery of maternal-child health care in the home, familiarized students with community resources, and provided opportunities to work with various aggregate populations including the homeless community in Washtenaw County and middle school students through the Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools.  Additionally, she provided clinical instruction focusing on Active Aging in Washtenaw County in cooperation with the Turner Senior Resource Center, Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Silver Club, and Chelsea Retirement Community. She established and coordinated the Spring-Summer India Immersion Program (2015-2018) which provides didactic instruction as well as clinical experiences in New Delhi, India for Nursing and LS&A students interested in health policy and the delivery of health care to populations. Her research interests are global health and cultural competence.
