Dr. Joiner conducts research to learn about, educate, and support people with living with diabetes and their families. His research is informed by his clinical experience as a Spanish-speaking nurse practitioner and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist in federally qualified health centers that serve populations that do not have adequate access to preventive and primary care health services.
Dr. Joiner’s studies include observational, survey, and intervention research aimed toward helping people with diabetes live full lives and achieve optimal quality of life and health outcomes. The following are brief descriptions of some of his past projects.
- Translating into Spanish a measure of perceived risk for type 2 diabetes and conducting a survey of Spanish-speaking Latino adults to better understand perceived risk for type 2 diabetes in vulnerable populations
- Conducting a qualitative interview study to learn about the experiences of Latino adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents with limited English proficiency
- Assessing the feasibility and acceptability of an exercise and coping program tailored to adolescents with type 1 diabetes
- Describing the impact of a workplace policy that promotes the prevention of type 2 diabetes in a large academic workforce population
- Conducting an observational study to explore how stressful life events affect young adults with type 1 diabetes
- Conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of type 2 diabetes prevention interventions delivered via distance-based technologies
Dr. Joiner’s current research centers around understanding further the stigma related to type 2 diabetes as experienced and/or perceived by Latino adults with type 2 diabetes. He is also developing and preparing to pilot test a community health worker delivered Spanish-language type 2 diabetes prevention support intervention for Latino adults with prediabetes.
