Dr. Loveland-Cherry’s teaching, practice, professional and scholarly work have been in the field of health promotion and risk reduction. More specifically, she has focused on risk reduction in families with children from preterm infants to adolescents. Her research - funded by National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR) - focuses on the development and testing of theory-based interventions for adolescents, parents, and families. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Loveland-Cherry served as a member of the US Preventive Service Task Force, an interdisciplinary group charged with developing evidence-based recommendations for health promotion and risk reduction.

Teaching

At the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Dr. Loveland-Cherry taught in the undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral programs in the areas of community health nursing, families and health, health promotion and risk reduction, research methods, and intervention research. In addition to serving in the classroom, she served as Director of the Division of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction Programs, the Director of the Doctoral Program, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and was instrumental in establishing the Family Nurse Practitioner and the Second Career Program. She served at the Primary Investigator/Director of the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) funded T32 in Health Promotion and Risk Reduction.
