Dr. Brush’s research focuses on social factors that contribute to health, with a particular focus on how they contribute to health disparities and health inequalities in urban populations. A majority of Dr. Brush’s research is conducted with partners in Detroit, using a community-based participatory research approach. She has been working with Detroit partners over the past decade to understand and address factors that contribute to housing instability and homeless in African American families. Recent work, with investigators at Henry Ford Hospital and  community partners aims to increase Black participation in cancer clinical trials to improve health outcomes. Dr. Brush also examines important issues in nurse workforce development and capacity building and is a leading expert on international nurse migration.

  • Measurement Approaches to Partnership Success (MAPS): An Innovative Tool for Assessing Long-Standing CBPR Partnerships. (Co-PI: RO1/NINR), 2016-2022.
  • Community-Based Participatory Research; Extending the Use of Innovative Methodoloties in the Behavior and Social Sciences (Co-I: R25/NIEHS). 2020-2024.
  • Participatory Action for Access to Clinical Trials (PAACT). (Co-PI: Genentech), 2021-2022.

Teaching

Dr. Brush’s emphasis on critical thinking and the development and use of evidence to enhance care quality and safety extends across all levels of the educational spectrum. At the doctoral level, Dr. Brush has taught several core courses and advises doctoral and post-doctoral students in nursing and other disciplines in their research interests. A practicing nurse practitioner for over 40 years, Dr. Brush also oversees students in their clinical practica and precepts students in primary care. She also supervises undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students across health disciplines in community-based research activities. Dr. Brush received the Mae Edna Doyle Teacher of the Year Award in 2010.
