Strengthening trauma-informed care and services for survivors

Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault who make it to SafeHouse Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, are a step closer to healing and reclaiming their lives, but that doesn’t mean the trauma of their experiences has gone away or that the road ahead will be an easy one.

Reactions to trauma may be boldly present or hiding below a calm surface, just waiting for a trigger. In either case, the toxic stress of trauma can take its toll on survivors’ physical and mental health.

Two junior faculty members at the University of Michigan School of Nursing were recognized at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Annual Conference on April 12-15, 2018.  

Lenette Jones, Ph.D., ACNS-BC, RN

Jones, assistant professor, won the 2018 New Investigator Award for the Health of Diverse Populations Research Interest Group at Midwest Nursing Research Society.

More than 200 students, faculty and researchers came together for the University of Michigan School of Nursing's eighth annual Research Day. The event celebrates the wide range of nursing research, from big data to health promotion, but this year it was nursing education that was the primary focus.

Student spotlight: A focus on healing after sexual assault and childhood trauma

Every 98 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted. On college campuses across the country, the risk of being assaulted is even higher.

Laura Sinko, a Ph.D. student and Hillman Scholar at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN), wants to help survivors heal beyond their physical injuries.

“These traumatic experiences occur, often causing a fragmentation that can disconnect you from who you thought you were, from other people and the world,” she explained. “Being able to reclaim your identity and regain control of your life is really important.”

Student Spotlight: UMSN junior studies how well nursing students take care of themselves

Jonah Kazmierski is starting his research career early. With an interest in pursuing a Ph.D., he is learning about the research process through a focus on health promotion.

UMSN undergrad earns grant to help local seniors

Erin Similuk’s clinical placement during the first semester of her senior year brought an unexpected challenge and accomplishment when her group was assigned to the Chelsea Retirement Community.

“I’ve always been really interested in working with geriatric populations,” said Similuk. “So many students want to work in pediatrics, but for some reason, I’ve always connected really well with seniors.”

Faculty Impact: An advocate for adolescents through practice and beyond

“Some of these kids get mislabeled as bad kids, but they are usually just kids who have had bad things happen to them, and it’s often because of the adults in their lives.”

Nurse practitioner Elizabeth Kuzma, DNP, FNP-BC, is speaking about adolescents she cares for at the Pathways to Success Academic Campus health center.
