Faculty impact: An unconventional path to UMSN’s Teacher of the Year award

Christine “Tina” Leech is a spirited example of making the most of unexpected opportunities through hard work and a willingness to step out of her comfort zone. Higher education was not a priority while she was growing up, but that didn’t stop her from building a distinguished military and academic career.

“Neither of my parents graduated from high school,” said Leech. “My step-father did, but not my mom or dad. Don’t get me wrong; they were supportive, but there was no emphasis on college.”

U-M visit inspires Detroit high school students to consider health care careers

Two dozen students from Detroit’s Cody Medicine and Community Health Academy were welcomed to the University of Michigan to learn about the roles of health care providers and potential career opportunities.

Hosted by the U-M School of Nursing (UMSN), the students toured UMSN’s high-tech Clinical Learning Center and spoke with nursing students and faculty about the many career paths for nursing.

Improving undergraduate clinical evaluation with ITS and Canvas

ITS Teaching & Learning data concierge Jeff Ziegler recently completed a project for the School of Nursing’s Undergraduate Nursing program that has greatly improved their student evaluation process.

Faculty impact: A champion for women and reproductive justice

Yasamin Kusunoki was a young girl growing up in California when she made an observation that stayed with her.

“I saw the power dynamics between boys and girls and that didn’t sit well with me,” she explained. “I come from a family of strong women, so whether it was on the playground or in a classroom, it bothered me when I saw girls not being treated equally.”

The disquiet carried into Kusunoki’s career, which is rooted in public health and sociology. She found herself drawn to research that examined the factors contributing to gender, racial and ethnic disparities.

Ph.D. student wins prestigious ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation award

Jordan Harrison, graduating this April with her Ph.D., has been awarded the 2017 ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award from Rackham Graduate School. 

This award carries a cash prize and recognizes exceptional and unusually interesting work produced by doctoral students. 

Harrison was a Hillman scholar and graduated in 2017.
