Update: On October 5, 2018, Denis Mukwege was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. 

As a young boy growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Dr. Alain Mukwege saw the best and worst of humanity.

UMSN faculty earns grant to study depression in Arab American women

Nadia Ali Muhammad Ali Charania, Ph.D., RN, a University of Michigan School of Nursing Clinical Assistant Professor, received a grant from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA).

Charania’s project, “Arab American Women with Recurrent Depression: Self-management Strategies and Social Determinants,”  builds on her previous work focused on management of recurrent depression. The contributions of Jo Anne Horsley, Ph.D., RN, FAAN (1940-2018) to the nursing profession and excellence in the practice and science of nursing are exceptional. Horsley was a three-time Michigan graduate, receiving her BSN in 1962, MS in 1968, and her Ph.D. in Education in 1971.

Professor and Director of the Ph.D. Program Ellen Lavoie Smith, Ph.D., APRN, AOCN®, FAAN, has been awarded the Welch/Woerner Path-Paver Award by the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research.

The Welch/Woerner Path-Paver Award is given to recognize scientists who achieve “one or more breakthroughs in theory development, research methods, instruments, or subject matter that has paved the way for other scientists and who has influenced the next generation of nurse researchers.”

UMSN adjunct faculty wins prestigious research award for work on pediatric pain management

Update: Dr. Voepel-Lewis joined UMSN as an associate professor in September 2018. 

Terri Voepel-Lewis, Ph.D., RN, a University of Michigan School of Nursing adjunct clinical instructor, has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the Protégé Award from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR). The award is given “to an evolving nurse scientist who shows great promise in advancing science.”

UMSN Systems, Populations and Leadership names new department chair

The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) announced Professor Rob Stephenson, MSc, Ph.D., will become chair of its Systems, Populations and Leadership (SPL) department effective July 1, 2018.

“We are fortunate to have a leader like this already in our midst who is ready to take on the demanding role of chair,” said UMSN Dean Patricia D. Student spotlight: First Ph.D. in family of nurses

Some people become a nurse because of a personal experience. Others may do so because they were inspired by a nurse in the family. Both reasons shaped Emily Boltey’s decision.

“My grandmother had a poor health trajectory in her last few years,” said Boltey, a Pittsburgh native who comes from a self-described ‘family of nurses.’ “She was in and out of the hospital constantly. My mom is a nurse and was always my grandma’s advocate. I had that moment where I realized I want to do that for my family and for patients who don’t have a nurse in their family.”

Occupational health nursing training at UMSN expands to doctor of nursing practice

The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) has recently been approved to offer doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) studies for occupational health nurses.

The occupational health nursing concentration is part of the University of Michigan’s Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering (COHSE), and offers tuition support funded by the National Institute of Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH is an institute of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Global Reproductive and Sexual Health Summer Institute

In May, 2018, University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) organized its first Global Sexual Health Summer Institute.
