Students who serve: Holly Carlson, U.S. Army

Holly Carlson is a proud military brat. Before serving in the Army Nurse Corps, she grew up on the move across the United States following her father, a retired Air Force pilot. Of the family’s five children, four have gone into military service: Carlson’s older brother is an A-10 pilot in the Air Force, her sister is an Army military intelligence officer, and her youngest brother is in the Navy ROTC. She’s also in a military marriage — her husband, Nicolai, is a naval officer pursuing dual master’s degrees in architecture and civil engineering at the University of Michigan.

County ends stay-in-place order as U-M COVID-19 cases drop

Nov 03, 2020

The Washtenaw County Health Department’s stay-in-place order for University of Michigan undergraduate students ends at 7 a.m. Nov. 3 and will not be extended, following a decrease in the proportion of county COVID-19 cases associated with U-M.

In a Nov. 2 press release, the health department said U-M student cases now represent 33 percent of the county’s total number, compared with 60 percent when the order was issued Oct. 20.

We dare to care for the caregivers

When Melissa Harris began her undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, she didn’t know what kind of nurse she wanted to be, but she was sure of two things:

“I kept saying, ‘I don’t want to do geriatrics, and I don’t want to do psych,’” Harris recalled.

U-M School of Nursing alumna Doris Grinspun (MSN '91), Ph.D., RN, FAAN, LLD(hon), Dr(hc), O.ONT, is one of four nurses selected for the American Academy of Nursing's COVID-19 Courage Award for her exceptional work to save lives, advance health equity and protect communities.

U-M School of Nursing Dean Patricia Hurn reappointed through 2026

At the recommendation of Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Susan Collins, the University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved the reappointment of Patricia D. Hurn, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, as dean of the School of Nursing for a second five-year term, effective Aug. 1, 2021, through July 31, 2026.

Five U-M faculty members elected to National Academy of Medicine

Five University of Michigan professors have been elected to the highest honorary society in the United States for researchers in medicine and health.

They study everything from the brain to health care policy and cancer care, and all have demonstrated decades of expertise and achievement.

Today, F. DuBois Bowman, Justin Dimick, Christopher Friese, Karin Muraszko and Henry Paulson join a select group of fewer than 60 current and emeritus U-M faculty and living former faculty, in the National Academy of Medicine.
