UMSN names new associate dean for undergraduate studies

Following a vigorous search process that engaged a strong community of faculty, staff and students, Dana Tschannen, Ph.D., RN, has been named the next associate dean for undergraduate studies in the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN).

“I am honored to be named the next associate dean for undergraduate studies,” said Tschannen. “Our undergraduate faculty, staff and students are extraordinary and passionate about patients, families, communities and the nursing profession. I can think of no better place to be as we learn, grow and transform undergraduate education and patient care together.”   

Tschannen currently serves as a clinical associate professor in UMSN’s Department of Systems, Populations and Leadership, and will begin the transition to her new position Sept. 1, working alongside current Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies Bonnie Hagerty, Ph.D., RN, until her retirement on April 30, 2020. Tschannen will officially begin her role as associate dean May 1, 2020.   

A proud U-M alumna, Tschannen earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from UMSN. She began her career as an ICU nurse and is recognized as a consummate clinician and researcher whose work has led the way in systems thinking about quality, teaming, communication and safety in hospital environments.

“We are really fortunate that Dr. Tschannen has agreed to step into this new role,” said UMSN Dean Patricia Hurn, Ph.D., RN, FAAN. “She is an experienced teacher and mentor and has been instrumental in designing and executing clinically based education. She is a critical thinker, addressing both challenges and opportunities with forethought and engagement of multiple stakeholders, and she has a deep passion for advancing our undergraduate program.”
