UMSN students and faculty finding new opportunities for impact in the community and abroad.
- Lisa Kane Low, Ph.D., CNM, FACNM, Associate Professor and Coordinator of UMSN’s Nurse Midwifery Education Program, served as a leader for Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates. The program was focused on infant mortality and maternal child health in Detroit.
- Associate Professor Marjorie McCullagh, Ph.D., RN, APHN-BC, COHN-S, was featured by U-M News Service for her work to protect the hearing of farmers. In addition, Dr. McCullagh received the Ernest Chiodo Outstanding Nurse of the Year award from the Michigan Association of Occupational Health Nurses (MAOHN).
- A kickoff event was held for “Thinking Globally and Acting Locally in Community Health Nursing.” The project includes plans for new and expanded partnerships with community agencies, study abroad options, and improving learning experiences through technology, such as videoconferences with nursing peers in Haiti. Support comes from the U-M Center for Research on Learning and Teaching award and a 3rd Century “Quick Wins” grant.
- BSN student Shannon Stone was awarded The Julia Strecher Memorial Scholarship. Julia was a UMSN student when she passed away at age 19. Julia brought a unique perspective to UMSN having undergone two heart transplants, one as a baby and one at age nine. Her parents established the scholarship to honor her memory. It is awarded annually to a freshman who is committed to career in nursing and shares values Julia had.
- The U-M Center for South Asian Studies highlighted UMSN junior Magdalene Kuznia’s recent trip to India in its Fall 2013 newsletter. Kuznia stayed with U-M alumna Jayaa Singh, founder of the Salokaya College of Nursing, and spent five weeks learning about Indian health care facilities including those dedicated to HIV/AIDS and cancer.
