UMSN Faculty Publications Update (with video)

Recent articles by UMSN faculty address potential opportunities in primary care from bullying to substance abuse.

UMSN is well-represented in the October issue of the Nurse Practitioner: The American Journal of Primary Healthcare with contributions from two University of Michigan School of Nursing Clinical Associate Professor Stephen Strobbe, Ph.D., RN, and Clinical Instructor Ray Blush, MSN, RN, ACNP-BC.

Dr. Strobbe’s recommendations in “Addressing substance use in primary care” suggest comprehensive ways nurse practitioners can have a positive effect on patients and families. “With nurse practitioners playing increasingly important roles in the delivery of primary care, it is critical that these highly qualified professionals be optimally prepared to help prevent, identify, and treat substance use and related disorders across the lifespan,” says Dr. Strobbe. “This article strives to provide basic information—along with readily available, high-quality resources—to help meet this vital need.”

Blush focuses on promoting better outcomes for patients with a common respiratory disease in “Acute bronchitis: Evaluation and management.” “Acute bronchitis affects millions of individuals, significantly impacting patient health and the healthcare industry,” says Dr. Blush. “Understanding evaluation and treatment guidelines for acute bronchitis allows the nurse practitioner to practice comprehensive care for patients. This article reviews evidence-based practices when caring for the patient with acute bronchitis, promoting optimization of healthy outcomes.”

Clinical Assistant Professor Donna J. Marvicsin, Ph.D., PNP-BC, CDE, contributes “Youth bullying: Implications for primary care providers” to the September 2013 issue of the Journal for Nurse Practitioners;  coauthors are UMSN Clinical Instructors Nicole Boucher, Ph.D, CPNP-PC, and Megan Eagle, MSN, FNP-BC. “Due to the prevalence of youth bullying and the long term adverse health outcomes associated with bullying, primary care providers can help establish office procedures that facilitate the recognition of youth bullying and provide resources to the children and families who have experienced it,” says Dr. Marvicsin.

Associate Professor Jody Lori Ph.D., CNM, FACNM, FAAN, has recently published two articles focused on increasing the safety of expectant mothers in Africa. “Promoting access: The use of maternity waiting homes to achieve safe motherhood” was published in the October 2013 issue of Midwifery. “Maternity waiting homes and traditional midwives in rural Liberia” was published in the 2013 November issue of International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics. More of Dr. Lori’s efforts can be seen in the following video.
