UMSN Associate Dean Appointed Chair of Institute of Medicine Roundtable
Dr. Antonia Villarruel will lead the IOM’s Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities.
“The Institute of Medicine (IOM) roundtables are important forums that bring people from diverse perspectives and sectors to address critical issues,” says Antonia M. Villarruel, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, Associate Dean for Research and Global Affairs and Nola J. Pender Collegiate Chair at the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN).
Dr. Villarruel will chair the IOM’s Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities with co-chair Mildred Thompson, M.S.W., Director of PolicyLink Center for Health and Place in Oakland, California. The roundtable was created to address racial and ethnic disparities in health care, to find new strategies to overcome disparities, and to develop new leadership in targeted areas.
“The roundtable is committed to raising awareness of racial and ethnic health disparities. It is able to more nimbly address emerging and challenging issues impacting health disparities and health equity,” says Dr. Villarruel.
The IOM is a “non-profit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.” More than 2,000 people work with the IOM to address the most pressing concerns in health care. The IOM has seven roundtables on a variety of health care topics created to foster collaborations between public and private institutions from community organizations, philanthropy, education, and business.
