University of Michigan Nurse Researchers Chosen for Distinguished Awards from Oncology Nursing Society
National recognition earned by 2 U-M School of Nursing scientists and an advanced practice nurse.
As a professional association of more than 35,000 members, the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) promotes excellence in oncology nursing and the transformation of cancer care. The ONS Distinguished Awards were developed to recognize individuals for their career achievements and contributions to cancer care.
UMSN Mary Lou Willard French Professor of Nursing Professor and UMCCC researcher Laurel Northouse, Ph.D., RN, FAAN - Distinguished Research Award
UMSN Assistant Professor and UMCCC researcher Ellen Lavoie Smith Ph.D., APRN, AOCN - Victoria Mock New Investigator Award
UMSN Adjunct Clinical Instructor and UMCCC nurse practitioner Peg Esper, MSN, MSA, RN, ANP-BC, AOCN - Clinical Lecture Award
Dr. Smith agrees with Dr. Northouse’s view on collaboration. “The award acknowledges the generosity of many mentors and colleagues who have passed on their knowledge, propped me up when I was discouraged, and pushed me to expand my reach,” she said. “I am extremely grateful and fortunate to have learned from many ‘leaders and the best.’”
“In 15 years of active ONS membership, I have never witnessed one institution sweeping these prestigious awards,” said Dr. Christopher Friese of UMSN, who nominated Peg Esper. “It speaks to Michigan as a nexus for oncology nursing scholarship and leadership.”
Award recipients will be honored in April in Washington, D.C., at the ONS 38th Annual Congress. Esper will present her lecture at the event; Drs. Northouse and Smith will present their research at the ONS conference "Connections: Advancing Care Through Science" in November.
ONS is known for advocating for improved patient care, developing education and treatment programs, as well as raising the profile of nursing in the media. It provides information and education to nurses around the world.
