UMSN Hosts International Symposium Showcasing Nursing Science

Leading experts in nursing science, representing nearly a dozen universities and organizations gathered at the University of Michigan to develop collaborative studies focused on care delivery.

The Michigan Symposium on Effectiveness and Implementation Research: Strengthening the Science featured authorities on academic-practice partnerships and current research in implementation and effectiveness science. University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) Dean Kathleen Potempa said, “We’re engaging in a dynamic synergy focused on nursing research. Some of this ground-breaking science is already being put into practice at hospitals nationwide and making a difference in the lives of millions of patients.”

The event began with a panel on academic-practice partnerships led by Dean Potempa andDr. Marge Calarco and Dean Kathleen Potempa Dr. Marge Calarco, Chief of Nursing Services at Michigan Health Services. Together, they stressed the importance of future cooperation and collaboration in innovation.

The symposium also included presentations on hot-button issues such as Nurse Practitioners as Primary Care Providers: Creating Favorable Work Environments in Massachusetts & New York State, by Lusine Poghosyan, of Columbia University. Additional presentations identified opportunities to strengthen nursing care delivery in home care and correctional facilities.

Dr. Marita Titler and Corinne LeeWhile the researchers presented their work for evaluation, much of the symposium also focused on advancing the future of nursing science. The scholars held strategy sessions to identify leadership behaviors to solve clinical problems and the next steps of research in those areas. Attendees include students from PhD and DNP programs, post-doctoral fellows, and all ranks of faculty.

“More research is needed on how best to deliver care that optimizes outcome and value,” Dr. Christopher Friese, Assistant Professor and the event’s chair said. “Our work together will strengthen the research base in this understudied area.”

Organizations represented: Queen’s University, University of Buffalo, Vanderbilt University, San Diego State University, University of Toronto, Saint Elizabeth & University of Ottawa, University of Western Ontario, Columbia University School of Nursing, New York University, University of Washington, and Perioperative Outcomes Initiative.
