Pierce Published in Women’s Health Issues
The July/August 2011 issue of Women's Health Issues featured an article by Associate Professor Dr. Penny Pierce. The article, entitled, “War-Related Stressors as Predictors of Post-Deployment Health of Air Force Women,” reported on a study recently conducted by Pierce and colleagues.
Dr. Pierce’s study sought to describe the incidence of physical health symptoms and their relationship with war-related stressors reported by women serving in the military in deployed locations. A sample of Air Force women who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom provided the study’s data. The research represents an effort to identify preventable risks to women that are associated with specific military duties, deployment type and location, or a combination of these and perhaps other factors.
“Attention needs to be directed toward studying the occupational, environmental, and psychological hazards that may affect women and men in unique ways,” Dr. Pierce concluded in her article. “Such information will provide critical evidence supporting our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our nation’s servicewomen.”
