Drs. Seng, Kane Low and Ronis' Maternal PTSD Study Published in Prestigious UK Journal

Explores the connection between different forms of trauma and perinatal outcomes.

Dr. Julia Seng, associate professor in the School of Nursing, was lead investigator on a study just published in the prestigious medical journal BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology This study explored the effects that post-traumatic stress disorder can have on birth weight and gestation periods. The study compared these birth effects to both a group of women with no trauma, as well as a group of women who suffered other forms of trauma.

The research study ultimately concluded that abuse-related PTSD contributes at least in part to such perinatal issues, especially when the subjects of that trauma are also associated with low income and education.

School of Nursing faculty members Dr. Lisa Kane Low, assistant professor, and Dr. David Ronis, research scientist, participated in the study as did U-M researchers Dr. Israel Liberzon and Michelle (Mickey) Sperlich.

The British based journal having published Dr. Seng's work is managed by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
