2021 Distinguished Alumni Award winner
The University of Michigan School of Nursing and the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award Selection Committee are excited to announce Joyce (Beebe) Thompson, Dr.P.H., RN, CNM, FAAN, FACNM, as the winner of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
Thompson, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Public Health degrees from U-M in 1964 and 1971, respectively, is an internationally recognized nurse ethicist, researcher, educator and practitioner. Her distinguished career reflects a lifelong passion for women’s health and human rights throughout the world.

- Alumni of the U-M School of Nursing
- Nominee has demonstrated exceptional contributions to the nursing profession
- Nominee has made a significant impact on the profession of nursing
- Nominee has made advances and improvements to the nursing profession
- Nominee has advanced knowledge through rigorous inquiry
- Nominee actively supports the mission and vision of the U-M School of Nursing
- Has not received a previous Distinguished Alumni Award
- Is not a current member of the Awards Committee
- Alumni nominees are not required to hold a specific degree for consideration
