U-M School of Nursing Reveals New Building Design
The U-M School of Nursing [UMSN] revealed the University of Michigan Regent’s approved exterior construction plans for its new state-of-the-art building of approximately 75,000 gross square feet.
The expansion will allow UMSN to fulfill its commitment to delivering exceptional education to students, preparing a skilled workforce of nursing scientists, educators and advanced practice nursing professionals that can help meet the public health needs of the world. 
Dean Kathleen Potempa said “With the growth in academic and research programs and increases in student enrollment that we are experiencing, this new learning center creates the additional space needed for our students to practice, research, engage, learn and succeed.”
The estimated cost of the new building project is $50 million and is the first building in UMSN history created specifically to support academic programming. The project was designed by the architectural firm of RDG Planning and Design. The innovative learning center will include instructional spaces, a clinical learning center with simulation and skill labs, and simulated patient suites in an environment that will foster collaboration and community. The building site will be located near the existing location, and while the new facility is expected to meet the need of expansion space that supports the School’s contemporary educational needs, the existing building structure will continue to be used for individual offices, small classrooms, and research space.
The School of Nursing is a top-ranked, world-recognized program committed to improving the health and well-being of patients and communities through education, research and service. The school is currently housed in the School of Nursing Building at 400 North Ingalls Street that was constructed in 1913 for use as a hospital and purchased by the university in 1977. The U-M Board of Regents approved the new building for the School of Nursing in March.
